Top 10 Unconventional Couples

Description

Today I was inspired by love (which is amazing given how death my love life is) or to be more specific, how love is portrayed. Here's the thing, as much as I enjoy a happy ending story that shows you how two people fell in love and eventually walked down the isle together, Monica from friends said something that I wish media highlighted more often "I don't want a fancy wedding, I want a marriage". Not all the couples here were actually shown walking down the isle (yet) but we do have a pretty good idea as to how their lives would be upon making it there if they did decide to do so, a paper doesn't make a home but love between the people who live in a house does.

The main thing that makes these couples unconventional is how we, or at least I, never got the feeling that they lost a part of themselves upon getting together but rather gained a life long supporter who wishes to see them succeed in every aspect of their lives; the hardest part of this list was picking couples who were officially together and didn't end their story on that "first kiss moment" but rather let us know what happens afterwards which is honestly the hardest part.

DISCLAIMER: there are spoilers for some of these couples as not all of them were introduced as "already a couple" but instead had a realistic journey towards becoming one and remaining one.

10. Luigi and Daisy (Mario series): because Daisy is not in as many games as her dear best friend people often call her either a "recolor" or a "leftover", well excuse her for not getting kidnapped so often. She has a very visual personality in the sports series due to her competitiveness, no nonsense attitude and somewhat open flirting with the taller, shier, younger Mario brother Luigi and that's exactly what works about them: they are not asking each other to change but rather they enjoy each others company very much. While confirmed or not can be up to discussion since they are a PG pairing, I do believe that they compliment each other quite well.

9. Princess Cadance and Shining Armor (MLP: FIM): while it is true that the show hasn't used them to their full potential, this is one of the few cases I have seen where the female has the bigger political role and it actually shows. Not only was it a miracle for their wedding to happen (parasitic invasion and all that) but they spend their first year as a married couple trying to keep an entire Kingdom from being destroyed/enslaved by an evil entity. It becomes even more obvious that Cadance's position is the higher ranking one when they are at events that require the presence of many political dignitaries and she is the only one sitting with other royals while he still acts as a guard.  I chose that particular image of them because of how trusting Cadance is about him trowing her straight at their enemy even if she hadn't slept or eaten much of anything in days.

8. Haruhi and Tamaki (OHHC): I used an anime image but it is the manga that truly sold me on these two, I love how upon finally getting together they just went on with their lives as usual with the only difference being that they were happy to be with each other and even their friends pointed out how comfortable they seemed to be cause that meant they couldn't tease them. They already knew each other so well that other than getting used to PDA there was nothing to hide at all as they already knew their families, friends, dreams and flaws; all they had to do was move forward and share a life.

7. Yusuke and Keiko (Yu Yu Hakusho): this one is a bit of "opposites attract" and "childhood friends" without getting corny. Even though they don't make it official til near the end, these two are pretty much together during the entire story while being in that neutral line of "friends to lovers". Neither one stops being who they are upon confessing their love regardless of how unorthodox that was, let's just call it the most casual proposal I have ever seen with one of the most impromptu kisses I have ever seen and it was fantastic.

6. Haruka and Michiru (Sailor Moon): this remains to this day, one of the most positives examples of a same sex couple I have ever seen. They are both quite loners in their own right and it is for that reason that it speaks volumes how much they take care of each other even if they are willing to give up everything to accomplish their mission. They pretty much raise a child together and it is implied that they took their time in getting to know each other  before anything sexual happened between them, no that wasn't done in an implicit way but some of their lines made it seem that way.

5. Sumire and Momo (Kimi wa petto): this manga doesn't have an anime adaptation but the story is really good, how good? It has a "will they, won't they" couple that doesn't make me want to trow something at them since the reason they don't get together right away is that neither is ready to truly act like grown ups and get their lives together before committing to each other. Even though she had more of a stable job than him during the beginning of their journey, he had his feeling better figured out than she did; both things are important in order to have a truly happy life regardless of who one decides to share it with and they truly put into perspective what makes a true relationship.

4. Felix and Calhoun (Wreck-it Ralph): these two are not as opposite to each other as one would imagine at first as they are both the heroes of their respective games and their sense of responsibility is very strong even if their games reflect how at one point playing a video game was truly done to "have a good time" as opposed to "telling a story where you move the character".  I have to give Felix credit on being so open about liking her in spite of her cold exterior, she was "programmed" with a sad back-story and she needed to get over it before being able to love someone once again, we all carry stuff from out past into the present but letting that go can be the only way to gain a future.

3. Bulma and Vegeta (Dragon Ball Z): two people who got together because of loneliness but never forgot who they were in the process. I would say that they are probably the best couple in all DBZ due to how little they changed in order to be happy together; they still argue, disagree, yell and feel embarrassed about each other's behavior from time to time (which is understandable as they are not even from the same planet); but they are both still proud of who they are and they willingly do their best to protect each other, their Planet and their family.

2. Hiccup and Astrid (HTTYD series): some people were dissapointed that they were shown as a couple from the start during the sequel but to me that just makes their presence even stronger. This is a very rare occurrence as Hiccup would technically be the Prince of the story (next in line to be chief) while Astrid would be the Knight of the story (his most trusted warrior) and yet the movie never points this out but simply shows it and doesn't force them into unnecessary drama that they already moved past years ago. They are comfortable with each other, they know what they are getting into because of their positions, their families, friends and tribe all know that they are together and they always have each other's backs; why is it so hard to tell a story where two people just so happen to be a couple without making that the whole point of the story? there is more to a character than who they date and we need to see that more often.

1. Minato and Kushina: this is the second time that they top one of my favorite couples's list but that's for good reason, Minato is not really the one who wears the pants in the relationship since Kushina is the more assertive one, even if he is the leader of the village; and Kushina in spite of being the more temperamental one manged to surprise fans and critics alike with how pretty she was, being described as a tomboy before she was even shown on screen got people's imagination running wild and nobody seemed to guess right how she'd look like. They never stopped being great ninjas/warriors and they were never expected to as their society is used to battling no matter how bad the circumstances may get and they went down fighting for their people but most importantly their son whom they kept on protecting even after death. While tragic couples rarely ever help my interest as I believe life to be dramatic enough as it is, I believe that they deserve the spot for trying to do one of the hardest things one could ever try: making a life with the person that you love instead of just dying for them.

I do believe that spending the rest of your life with one person takes more courage than dying in the name of love because upon death there isn't much left for us to do while the other person has to carry on without our help in the unpredictable journey that is life; a true love doesn't hold you back or lets you go as an excuse for giving up but rather walks alongside you even if it's hard.

So there you have it, my favorite romantic yet not always too romantic couples. Nothing here belongs to me as I'm more of a reviewer than a content creator. Meme belongs to: www.deviantart.com/art/Top-10-…
